Bye bye Genetic Determinism and Hello Epigenetics!

You are in charge of your life!

The notion of genetic determinism is the belief that human behavior is controlled by an individuals genes. Genetic traits are inherited and with the belief that genes turn themselves on and off, the public has been led to believe that they are victims of their heredity. By 1990 the belief of genetic control was undermined by the new science of “epigenetic control”. The prefix “epi” means above. Therefore epigenetic control translates as control above the genes. Specifically the above represents the environment and more importantly our perception of the environment. Since we are able to control our environment and our perceptions. This knowledge reveals that we are actually controlling our gene activity.

Genes are not self actualizing meaning they are not capable of controlling their own activity.

So first of all our human body is made about 50 to 70 trillion cells. Which are called “stem cells”. Stem cells for the simple purpose of this reading they are just growing cells. So according to Dr. Bruce Lipton he started to do an experiment with these stem cells in which he separated a stem cell and put it in a petri dish by itself. That cell started to divide every 10 to 12 hours, so after a week he had 30,000 stem cells in the petri dish. All cells came from one parent cell, so in this case he had 30,000 genetically identical cells in the first petri dish. Then what happened next is that he splatted the 30,000 cells into 3 petri dishes all dishes had genetically identical cells but what was different is that he fed In each culture dish a different culture medium. The culture medium is the laboratory equivalent of blood (thats where cells normally live in) He created a culture medium to try to match the composition of blood. Then he created three different versions of culture medium by slightly changing the chemistry of the culture medium. So guess what happened? in Petri Dish A the cells formed muscle, in culture medium dish B the cells formed bone and in the third dish environment C the cells formed fat cells. So what controls the fate of the developing cells? The difference of the culture medium, so what’s that represented on a bigger scale? the “environment” of the cells. What happened here is that Dr Lipton discovered that the genes in this case were not self actualizing which only means that they weren’t turning themselves on and off by themselves instead it was the environment which was causing this action.

In our body we have over a 100,000 different proteins each with their own unique shape. According to Dr Lipton proteins plus environmental signals equal behavior. So let’s translate that into english. Its like medicine (if your biology isn’t working correctly) taking a drug in can create an action that should return health back to normal again. The “environmental signal” in this case would the medicine which causes an effect on the proteins by reshaping it. By the way environmental signals in our life are much more efficient in controlling protein changes than are physical drugs.

The study of signals going from the environment across a cell membrane is part of the science called “signal transduction”. So when signals go into the cell they can go into the nucleus. And what’s in the nucleus? The chromosomes. Chromosomes are made of 50% protein and 50%DNA. The signals of the environment can either affect the DNA molecules or they can affect the protein molecules that are forming the chromosome. So when a signal comes in that affects the DNA it affects it by actually binding to the surface of the DNA molecule groups called methyl groups which represent a carbon and three hydrogen atoms. A methyl group when attached to a DNA molecule can generally inhibit the the activity of that DNA blueprint. So the DNA blueprint activity is now being controlled by the signals coming from the environment.
